Today, the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO) welcomed a delegation from the United Republic of Tanzania comprising officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, the High Commission of the United Republic of Tanzania in Uganda, and the Tanzania Ports Authority representative in Uganda.
The delegation was led by Eng. Abdillah Mataka, Director of Economic Infrastructure and Social Services at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation. The visit formed part of preparations for the introduction of new operational routes for the MV Mwanza on Lake Victoria. As part of their mission, the delegation visited port infrastructure in Jinja to assess its readiness and explore opportunities for enhanced regional connectivity through lake transport.
During their visit to the LVFO Secretariat, the delegation was received by the Executive Secretary of LVFO, Mr. Tom Mukasa Bukenya. The delegation was provided with a comprehensive presentation on the establishment and mandate of LVFO, highlighting the Organization’s achievements, ongoing projects, and the challenges it continues to address in promoting the sustainable management and development of fisheries resources within the Lake Victoria Basin.
The presentation was followed by fruitful discussions on areas of mutual interest and opportunities for strengthened collaboration. The delegation commended LVFO for its important role in fostering regional cooperation and advancing sustainable fisheries management across the East African Community Partner States.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation reaffirmed its commitment to providing the necessary support to LVFO in the implementation of its mandate and ongoing programmes. The visit underscored the shared commitment of both institutions to regional integration, sustainable development, and the enhancement of transport and economic opportunities within the Lake Victoria region.
The engagement further strengthened the longstanding partnership between LVFO and the United Republic of Tanzania in promoting the sustainable utilization of Lake Victoria’s resources and supporting regional socio-economic development.
